Putting an end to all speculation, US President Donald Trump finally met North Korean leader Kim Jong-un on June 12. Singapore was chosen as a neutral venue to host the historic summit. Literally, the island city-state in Asia grabbed the attention of the entire world, as the two leaders met at the Capella Hotel on Sentosa Island after several twists and turns. Till Tuesday, the global community was not sure whether the two belligerent leaders would sit together. However, the two leaders scripted history and showered praises on each other.
Both President Trump and Kim claimed that the meeting was a successful one and the two countries would work together to restore peace (in the Korean peninsula). At the end of the summit, the president said that Kim agreed to ‘complete denuclearisation of the Korean Peninsula‘ soon, while the North Korean leader stressed that both sides decided to ‘leave the past‘ behind and ‘the world shall see a major change‘. Kim also said that “it was not easy to get here”.
Indeed, it wasn’t easy to experience such a historic moment…… The meeting was all set to be cancelled in the first week of June… Finally, diplomacy prevailed and the two leaders worked really hard to set the stage. There is no doubt that the Trump-Kim summit opened a very positive chapter of political history. We have to wait to see the outcome. Whatever may be the result, the timing of the summit is important. Kim has emerged as one of the most authoritarian world leaders in recent times, while President Trump is popularly known as ‘extreme hardliner’. Still, they signed a joint statement in Singapore.
President Trump and Kim also invited each other to visit their respective countries and both accepted the invitation. The US president, who had said (in September 2017) that the “Rocket man should have been handled a long time ago. We can’t have mad men out there shooting rockets all over the place”, called the North Korean dictator ‘a very talented man‘ after the summit.
This statement is important, as well as interesting. Historically, the US considers ‘Communists’ as its enemies. This is the source of the conflict between the US and North Korea. Washington is also concerned about Pyongyang’s nuclear programme. Kim had complicated the situation by announcing that North Korea was ready to launch attacks on mainland America. The announcement prompted the US to impose tougher economic sanctions on the Asia-Pacific nation.
The Joint Statement
So, it was difficult for both Trump and Kim to overcome the bitterness, hostility and hatred. Now, the global community should thank the two leaders for making the seemingly ‘impossible’, possible. At the same time, they should be aware of the fact that the peace-loving world is looking forward to them. Their responsibility has increased a lot and now, it can be said that it’s their turn to deliver.
