The ‘Reluctant’ Prince

The monarchy has survived in a few countries in the world. Although the Royal Family has lost its power in Britain, it still exists. Still the queen rules Britain as per tradition and the family enjoys royal status in the country.
It is quite natural that a son of the Royal Family will be a king. However, Prince Harry, the son of Prince Charles and Princess Diana, wants to get rid of the royal ‘cage’. He recently surprised the world by saying that he does not want to be a king. Kensington Palace’s Prince Henry of Wales wants to enjoy a common man’s life. He claimed that (in fact) none of the Royal Family wants to succeed the queen. “Is there any one of the Royal Family who wants to be king or queen? I don’t think so,” he said.
2500 years ago, a king’s son left everything in a night in search of answers to some basic questions of life and philosophy. Today, he is known as Lord Buddha. No, Britain’s Prince Harry has no such plan. He only believes royal protocols are meaningless. Prince Harry is not at all interested in tradition, glory, pride, etc.
In an interview with American ‘Newsweek’ magazine, Prince Harry recently said that Princess Diana’s death on August 31, 1997 changed his life completely.

Millions of people across the world had seen the little prince walking behind his mother’s coffin on the streets of London. Perhaps, none of the Royal Family realised his feelings on that day. Prince Harry, who was just 12 when his mother died, admitted that he was devastated and coming ‘very close’ to a breakdown several times. Only after reaching 32, the prince admitted that he was ‘tired’ of the Royal Family rules.
‘Matured’ Harry is grateful to his mother. He confessed that he had learnt a lot from the Princess of Wales. He, along with his mother and elder brother, viewed the life and suffering of homeless poor people. Even today, his thoughts are full of those memories. His mother taught Harry how to think in a different way and how to live.

However, Harry knows that it is difficult for him to live a “different” life. He has no plan to leave the Royal Family. Rather, he wants to perform his duties and to take forward the tradition. He described the monarchy as a “force for good” and suggested that he and his brother Prince William are trying to overhaul its image, saying: “We are involved in modernising the British monarchy. We are not doing this for ourselves, but for the greater good of the people.” He added: “We want to make sure the Monarchy lasts and are passionate about what it stands for. But it can’t go on as it has done under the Queen. There will be changes and pressure to get them right.”

Once, his mother had tried to modernise the British Royal Family. But, she was an “outsider”, who became a member of the Royal Family only because of her marital status. On the contrary, her son was born as a prince. It is not important whether he can break the tradition or modernise the Royal customs. But, the way he expressed his inner feelings proves that he is the son of Princess Diana, who was never keen to lead her life by the rules of the Royal Family and wanted to be free.
